About our OysterCrete Program created by H2Oasis.
Short History
OysterCrete started doing research shortly after Hurricane Katrina crossed our path's and wiped out the N.West Gulf Coast's oyster reefs.Growing up along the coast, loving the outdoors, fishing and not to mention eating oysters really made an impact on me seeing how these natural reefs can be so easily dessimated.
Even though reefs had been on a slow decline thru the region over the years from over harvesting, or habitat destruction there was a huge impact after large storms. It very soon became apparant that without a little assistance that the native natural reefs would not recover nor survive. Thats when I started researching and studying the life cycle, influence and impact that the local oyster reefs have for our way of life.
I have been working with a product called Aragocrete for several years for using in the aquarium trade as used for live rocks
and coral and fish support in saltwater and cichlid type aquarium setups with great success. Plus being manmade had a zero impact
effect by discouraging people from taking natural rock and fauna from the existing waters and reefs.
It didnt take long to realize, since the Aragocrete product is calcium based utilizing specific sand and crushed oyster shells,
that it would indeed work as an amazing oyster bed seeding platform. The two biggest benefits being, extremely low economic impact to create
and being moveable, so they can be seeded and then placed anywhere as needed to create new osyter reefs from.
The single largest difference in our oystercrete program and those that are already in existance is our
ability to adapt and modify based on the reef needs, local environment and erosion and wave control.
To help in these matters, we actually created what we call a "location interview" and study the exact environment
and hydraulics of the area's and then design an oystercrete rock that will be best for those types of parameters.
This is extremely beneficial in the fact that each and every oyster reef is as individual as we are and each must be
treated correctly with that in mind. So we have several rock styles and designs as the local environment for each
particular reef defines, so we can meet those needs.
There's not any one specific design or concept that will fit for every oyster reef need, and thats why here at OysterCrete we have developed several designs to be used at various locations as dictacted by local and natural habitats.
